08:10 pm - The Invisible Mother

THE INVISIBLE MOTHER

It all began to make sense, the blank stares, the lack of response, the way one of the kids will walk into the room while I'm on the phone and ask to be taken to the store.

Inside I'm thinking, 'Can't you see I'm on the phone?'

Obviously, not.

No one can see if I'm on the phone, or cooking, or sweeping the floor, or even standing on my head in the corner, because no one can see me at all.

I'm invisible. The invisible Mum. Some days I am only a pair of hands, nothing more:

Can you fix this? Can you tie this? Can you open this?

Some days I'm not a pair of hands; I'm not even a human being. I'm a clock to ask, 'What time is it?'. I'm a satellite guide to answer, 'What number is the Disney Channel?' I'm a car to order, 'Right around 5:30, please.'

I was certain that these were the hands that once held books and the eyes that studied history and the mind that graduated suma cum laude - but now they had disappeared into the peanut butter, never to be seen again. She's going; she's going; she is gone!

One night, a group of us were having dinner, celebrating the return of a friend from England …Janice had just gotten back from a fabulous trip, and she was going on and on about the hotel she stayed in.

I was sitting there, looking around at the others all put together so well. It was hard not to compare and feel sorry for myself. I was feeling pretty pathetic, when Janice turned to me with a beautifully wrapped package, and said, 'I brought you this.'

It was a book on the great cathedrals of Europe. I wasn't exactly sure why she'd given it to me until I read her inscription:

'To Charlotte , with admiration for the greatness of what you are building when no one sees.'

In the days ahead I would read - no, devour - the book.

And I would discover what would become for me, four life-changing truths, after which I could pattern my work:

No one can say who built the great cathedrals - we have no record of their names. These builders gave their whole lives for a work they would never see finished. They made great sacrifices and expected no credit. The passion of their building was fueled by their faith that the eyes of God saw everything.

A legendary story in the book told of a rich man who came to vist the cathedral while it was being built, and he saw a workman carving a tiny bird on the inside of a beam. He was puzzled and asked the man, 'Why are you spending so much time carving that bird into a beam that will be covered by the roof? No one will ever see it.'

And the workman replied, 'Because God sees.'

I closed the book, feeling the missing piece fall into place.

It was almost as if I heard God whispering to me, 'I see you, Charlotte. I see the sacrifices you make every day, even when no one around you does. No act of kindness you've done, no sequin you've sewn on, no cupcake you've baked, is too small for me to notice and smile over. You are building a great cathedral, but you can't see right now what it will become.'

At times, my invisibility feels like an affliction. But it is not a disease that is erasing my life. It is the cure for the disease of my own self-centeredness. It is the antidote to my strong, stubborn pride.

I keep the right perspective when I see myself as a great builder. As one of the people who show up at a job that they will never see finished, to work on something that their name will never be on.

The writer of the book went so far as to say that no cathedrals could ever be built in our lifetime because there are so few people willing to sacrifice to that degree.

When I really think about it, I don't want my son to tell the friend he's bringing home from college for Thanksgiving,

'My Mum gets up at 4 in the morning and bakes homemade pies, and then she hand bastes a turkey for three hours and presses all the linens for the table.' That would mean I'd built a shrine or a monument to myself.

I just want him to want to come home. And then, if there is anything more to say to his friend, to add, 'you're gonna love it there.'

As mothers, we are building great cathedrals. We cannot be seen if we're doing it right.

And one day, it is very possible that the world will marvel, not only at what we have built, but at the beauty that has been added to the world by the sacrifices of invisible women.

Great Job, MUM!

Share this with all the Invisible Mums you know...I just did.

Hope this encourages you when the going gets tough as it sometimes does.

We never know what our finished products will turn out to be because of our perseverance.

08:19 pm - Now that's what I call a cupcake!
Here's the cake I made for Alannah's First Birthday party. I found the idea in the Super Food Ideas magazine, and then customised it to fit our Easter theme. I had a bit of a drama trying to find the right sized tin for the cake but in the end used my pyrex glass bowl and it worked a treat.

08:29 pm - Come Hail Or Shine - Or Chopped Fingers - I Will Write Tonight!
A while ago I timetabled my evenings. I know, it sounds a bit teacherish of me - but it was one way of guaranteeing I would use my child free time effectively and efficiently - and get things done.

So I set aside a night for Playgroup admin, a night for quilting (which also doubles as TV night), a night for scrapping, and a night for writing. On Monday nights Ken has CFA training followed by international conference call for work - so I decided it would be the perfect night for me to lock myself away with the computer and write. I'm working on my novel, which I have completely reread and annotated ready for drafting, as well as an article and a few shorter pieces for possible submissions.

Well, since setting aside Monday nights as Writing Night things have kept getting in the way. Ken didn't have CFA training or meetings, children took a long time to settle, I has gastro...but over the weekend I realised that tonight would be the night. Writing Night. No negotiations.

And then I had to go and slice a chunk out of the end of my finger with my rotary cutter while I was cutting up some fabric for some patchwork blocks. And it wasn't like I was being careless or anything - I was just cutting squares and triangles and suddenly the edge of my finger. So we went into the Superclinic and saw a doctor straight away who rebandaged the wound (it started bleeding again when they took my brilliant bandage off), gave me a tetanus injection and sent me on my way with care instructions and back up bandaging supplies.

But...the pain has subsided now (except when I strain it) and I am very capable of typing without using my left index finger (although changing poo filled nappies is absolutely impossible). So I will write! Even if it is only this blog post...

Tonight as I tucked Sophie into bed she played with my hair and said: "Mum, you look good. You look nice and tidy."

06:40 pm - Quote Of The Day Goes To...
Sophie!

During her second serving of dinner tonight: I just love this dinner, mum. It's fantastic!

We had a thrown together risotto with chicken, select veg, crumbled feta, grated parmesan cheese, fresh thyme and fresh parsley. Alannah gobbled hers up too - although hers had been mushed.

06:32 pm - Sophie says...
Me: You're a very tall girl, Sophie.
S: Yes, that's because I'm growing.

*pauses then flaps arms, chicken style*

S: And sometimes I pretend to be a chicken!

Who can understand a 4 year old's segue?

02:09 pm - Sophie says...
We were playing in the play room and Cascada's version of Savage Garden's "Truly Madly Deeply" came on the radio.

It came to the chorus...

I want to stand with you on a mountain.
I want to bathe with you in the sea.
I want to lay like this forever.
Until the sky falls down on me...

Sophie thinks, then says: "She must feel like Chicken Licken".

(The lesson here being never underestimate how much of what is said on the radio penetrates your four year old's mind).

Sand art on Eastern Beach (8/10).

Alannah snuggled up in the hug-a-bub asleep on the beach (8/10).

Sophie and Alannah having a swing back at our holiday cabins (8/10).

08:56 am - Melbourne Show Photos
Here are some photos from yesterday. I did quite well taking pictures since most of them were done one handed.

The first activity we did was go "fruit picking" in the ANimal Nursery Discovery Farm Pavilion. Sophie really enjoyed this simple activity and unless I had suggested she might like to see other things she would have done this for quite some time! All it involved was taking plastic fruit from the wooden trees and placing them into wooden crates. Looks like the creators of this activity knew four year olds very well.

Then it was time for a tractor ride. Not knowing the unique things that shows had to offer, Sophie was also more than happy to play in the sandpit nearby. Until I suggest that she might like to...

...hold a chicken!

Here's me and Alannah - Alannah was in the hug-a-bub having a lovely time patting woolly sheep with her feet and grabbing the ties on the back packs of people in front of us in the queues. Note the hat, [info]klclutte !

The reason we went to the show in the first place is because I heard that Sampson the Monster Truck would be there - and since Sophie has a thing for Monster Trucks...well...you get the picture.

Except Sampson was very loud, wasn't he, Sophie?

Alannah enjoyed Sampson too - can you see her two bottom teeth?

When I grow up I want to be a policeman. Who would have thought we'd spend so much time in the Victorian Government Pavilion!

You know how the ditty goes...

The Racing and Diving pigs were a bit of a let down. We went to the stand nice and early, got squashed into the seats only to see two races and two dives. Ah well. That's what the show is all about, isn't it?

11:09 am - Your Time Management Problems Solved
Has anybody else seen that ad for Sorbent Toilet paper where the lady claims that the 50% longer toilet rolls mean that you "spend less time in the day changing toilet rolls" and thus have "more time for your busy schedule"?

How long does it take her to change a bloody toilet roll? Further, how often would she normally change the toilet roll during the day? Sheesh!

06:10 pm - Sophie Says...
If you want an ego boost - come talk to my four year old...

Here we are, hanging up the wet washing and she has turned it into a game - game show style. She is grouping the colours and doing a lot of calling out and cheering.

"Pink things! We are looking for pink things! And here are the tights! They are long and straight and need ironing!!! " (crowd goes wild).

Then suddenly I hear...

"Now we are looking for grey things. And here is the biggest pair of underpants you have ever seen!"

I turned around hoping she might be holding Ken's undies. But she was holding mine...

(Of course her own get described as "little, pink, cute undies")
